Bantry Bay is another affluent suburb in Cape Town, South Africa, situated on the slopes of the iconic Lion's Head, overlooking the rocky coastline of Sea Point on the one side and Clifton on the other with it's world-renonwed beaches. Bantry Bay is known to be the most wind-free area in Cape Town and is also centrally located between the city bowl and other areas of interest on the Cape Peninsula.
Bantry Bay is just a 15 minute car journey along the beautiful Cape coast from the V&A Waterfront and offers stunning views out over the ocean although given it is hidden in a bay, it is more sheltered from the winds which Cape Town is well known for. It likes right between two vibey areas – Sea Point and Clifton, both of which have beaches you can enjoy as Bantry Bay itself is without one. The bay hugs the slopes of iconic Lion’s Head and is within easy reach of Table Mountain and the cable way and so ideally located as a spot to explore the city from.
As a place in itself, Bantry Bay is perfect to base yourself as it is within easy reach of the trendy Camps Bay bars and restaurants as well as the gorgeous beaches of Clifton and Saunders Rock or indeed the lovely views over Sea Point. With the bay located right in the shadow of Lion’s Head, the area is well sought after and with those gorgeous sea views you’ll truly feel like you’re in a heavenly city!
We absolutely love Ellerman House, one of the most exclusive properties in Bantry Bay. The property itself is much like a museum with fine art hanging in the hallways and in the bedrooms, but it also has its very own gallery exclusively for guests of the hotel. Ellerman House also has two private villas which are ideal for families or groups of friends to take out while they explore the city, all privately catered and so beautiful you may never want to leave! We know the team here very well indeed and they really do pull out all the stops so we would love to get you booked in to enjoy the best of the best.
As with the rest of the city, Bantry Bay is wonderful to visit all year round, although outside of the rainy season (June through to August) it can be enjoyed at its best with piercing blue skies and beautiful views out over the ocean unimpeded by clouds or drizzle. The benefit of staying here in the winter is that the rates can come down a tad and it certainly doesn’t rain every day which means you get to benefit from a stay that may be slightly less dollar but just as beautiful!
Many people who stay in Bantry Bay will use it as a base from which to explore the city. With the V&A just five minutes away and sandwiched between some of the most trendy places in Cape Town, the bay is ideal for those who want to step out and see as much as they can without the busyness of being settled at the V&A itself. And, those views! With beaches on either side of the bay, you really won’t feel like you’re in a city at all.
Bantry Bay is just 15 minutes away from the V&A Waterfront. Here at Tailormade Africa, we can book you private transfers with guides to help you explore or indeed the hotels can book you a cab which you can jump into at your leisure.
Ellerman House is the quintessential urban retreat for discerning luxury travellers wanting complete exclusivity in Cape Town. Located in Bantry Bay, the small, privately owned hotel offers spectacular Atlantic Ocean views against the dramatic backdrop of Lion’s Head... Learn more
