O.R. Tambo named after one of the former ANC presidents Oliver Reginald Tambo, was renamed from Jan Smuts International Airport in 2006. O.R. Tambo International Airport is Africa's largest and busiest airport set in Kempton Park, Johannesburg. This airport handles between 21 and 28 million passengers per year. It is a fully-fledged airport with a huge duty-free shopping zone, restaurants, bars and luxury lounges.

What does OR Tambo stand for?

The airport was renamed in 2006 to honour the memory of one of South Africa's national heroes and icons, Oliver Reginald Tambo. He was a South African anti-apartheid politician and revolutionary who served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1967 to 1991.

What are the top attractions at OR Tambo?

As airports go there is actually quite a lot going on here! There are tonnes of great shops in the international terminal which you can make use of to grab some last-minute presents for loved ones back home (or indeed for yourself!) and if you are simply looking for a lovely place to get your feet up and get ready for your big journey home you can pay a little extra for access to one of the VIP Lounges and gain access to just a little extra comfort while you wait for your flight call. If you’re peckish then you also have a number of excellent little coffee shops and restaurants that you could pop in to… and even a pub for a last minute pint!

Top restaurants at OR Tambo?

There are a number of hotel chains right by the airport which have some lovely bars and restaurants well worth popping into if you’d like a meal before or after your flight. The fair inside the airport isn’t too bad either, and are mainly fast food chains so that the waiting time isn’t going to make you miss your flight. If you’d like first-hand help picking a restaurant we would be delighted to help, as our team are often in and out of the airport and keep totally current on what’s hot!
