Melrose is centrally located within the larger Johannesburg metro. It is a developing upmarket suburb characterised by the famous Melrose Arch, which is an ZAR 800 million mixed-use development, including 2 hotels, office and retail space, along with residential space. Melrose Arch is set for high-end luxury, fashion and entertainment.
Melrose, one of Johannesburg most exclusive up-market suburbs, is just 30 minutes by road from O.R. Tambo Airport. Here at Tailormade Africa, we will include a private transfer for you if you have accommodation booked in this area or indeed if you’re in Johannesburg and would like to visit the area. As a rule of thumb we include a driver/guide for all itineraries which include Johannesburg and so you don’t have to worry about making your own way through Jo’burg traffic!

Melrose is best known for the upmarket shops, cafes and restaurants which are popular with locals and tourists alike and we have spent many a day relaxing in the gorgeous glass fronted shops which align the streets! Situated between the two other popular districts of Rosebank and Sandton, Melrose is also home to the beautifully manicured James & Ethel Gray Park which has views out over the skyline of Johannesburg.
Melrose Arch, what a place. The development itself is an ZAR 800 million mixed-use space complete with every want and need including some incredible shops, cafes and restaurants well worth visiting. The feeling is more like a European street with a distinctive African vibe, where you can sit on outside tables sipping a deliciously crisp Sauvignon in the gorgeous sunshine, contemplating where to spend your hard-earned cash next! At special times of the year, such as Christmas, Melrose Arch puts on a special show with a fabulous marketplace, music and entertainment which draws in a truly trendy crowd and is great fun!
Melrose is roughly 30 minutes away from O.R. Tambo airport, traffic permitting of course. On arrival into Johannesburg airport, we can organise for you to be welcomed by a driver and taken through to Melrose in comfort. We can also make a plan for you to have a specialist guide take you around the city for a full day exploring the sights and help you take all your shopping bags back to the hotel for you as it’s likely you’ll spend a bob to two in this beautiful district!
Johannesburg itself has so much to see and do, it’s an ideal stop over en-route to your safari or indeed at the end of your trip as a bit of a place to get your final shopping done before you head back home. We have a super-sylish little hotel we love in this part of the city called The Peech Hotel, a wonderful home-from-home and a couple of nights is perfect to get a feel for the city. Of course if you’re very into your art and history then we would recommend a little longer and we can with pleasure book you a private specialist guide to give you full insight into all this cosmopolitan city have to offer.
